27" 5K Retina Display iMac (Late 2015) Screen glitching and crashing with no replicatable cause.

Hi, I've had this problem for years and have searched for a fix but can't seem to find the cause of this issue.

My iMac screen will glitch out and the computer will crash. This happens fairly often, maybe once or twice in a session even whilst using fairly low-demand applications such as Chrome, Word and Teams. I find I can't replicate the issue on purpose.

Sometimes the screen will glitch and then recover and be okay. Sometimes it won't happen for weeks but eventually, the screen will start to glitch again. Also, occasionally when the computer crashes it won't boot back up again, the boot starts but the bar gets stuck at around 25% or sometimes 70%.

This has been a very frustrating issue for me, I actually stopped using this computer in 2020 but after a need arose I plugged it back in with the hopes it would work again and it did! And it worked perfectly, for a couple of weeks. Now the same old problems have reared their heads again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have attached the latest crash report:

Error 5101...

So, according to the articles, I have an incompatible Boot ROM version (or commonly known as BIOS). (To check it, go to the Apple logo - About My Mac- System Report - Hardware and see the number of Boot ROM version)

And that was right! I have two other MBPs and the Boot ROM versions were 428 for the 2014 and 424 for the 2015. The problem one was still at 192. My speculation is macOS has something similar to a compatibility mode so it could run on older BIOS versions but couldn’t boot from the Recovery Partition, especially Big Sur. I bought this Mac with no SSD and put in an SSD with Catalina pre installed, so the BIOS was probably not updated.

So how I solved this was pretty time consuming, but it worked! I used Shift Cmd Opt R to get Yosemite back on the SSD. Then I went to App Store and updated to Big Sur. After a longer than usual update and many more restarts that took about 3 hours total, my Boot ROM version was updated to 424 and the problem was solved.

EDIT: I got another one with ver. 180 firmware and when I trigger IR it doesn’t error out anymore, but the latest OS it could go up by IR is Catalina. From there I could manually update to Big Sur 11.1 but the firmware version stays the same. And of course, no access to Recovery partition. They fixed it in a half-assed way.

Try this, I was also getting the same 5101F error..

pressing Option+Command+R doesn’t work so I reinstalled the earlier OS by pressing Shift+Option+Command+R and then Start button.

It takes nearly 30-40 minutes to reinstall the earlier version of Mac OS. In my case I had Catalina installed by earlier version of Sierra installed.

 This will definitely work..

I see a couple of things, the computer is definitely suffering from Kernel Panics which may be caused by either hardware or software. I don't see any of the normal software indications so that leads me to believe the KP's are caused by hardware.

The most common hardware causes are RAM related and failing hard drives. I see your computer has 16GB of RAM, was the computer purchased with 16GB or was it upgraded? Also, what brand of RAM was purchased (assuming you upgraded it yourself) and where was it purchased from.

The second thing to check is the internal HD, it's almost 10 years old and is WELL past its prime! I recommend that you download DriveDX and test the internal HD. If ANY errors appear on the DriveDX report then that pinpoints that you have a failing HD that should be addressed.

Considering the computer is so old, if it is the HD I would not recommend spending any money on it as the computer is obsolete and has little monetary value. I would seriously consider replacing it with a current Mac mini and add a display of your choice. You can do this for <$1200 and get a MUCH MUCH faster and more stable machine than your 2015 27" iMac.

Hi BDAqua,

I managed to install Sierra through the USB however it hasn't fixed the Boot ROM issue. The ROM number is still showing as 170.0.0.0.0, it seems it is stuck like this due to a limitation with the stock SSD the iMac was shipped with.

I've found many reports of this, along with this article: https://eclecticlight.co/2020/07/23/firmware-updates-and-the-imac-retina-5k-27-inch-late-2015-imac171/

It appears there is no intention from Apple to address this issue which is frustrating as it could also be the potential cause of these kernal panics I've been experiencing, not to mention the causes of the errors I had in trying to reinstall OS through internet recovery.

Do you have any information on this Boot ROM 170.0.0.0.0 issue? Is there a solution that doesn't involve me taking apart this iMac (something I am very unlikely to be able to do successfully)? Ideally, I wouldn't like to pay money to replace a drive that is fully functional in every sense other than a forced limitation through Apple that doesn't allow the firmware to update for no good reason?

Mar 12, 2024 2:06 PM in response to rkaufmann87

Hi rkaufmann89 and BDAqua,

I have tried to do the reinstall as in the Reddit post shared.

When I boot into the recovery mode with CMD+SHIFT+OPTION+R and select reinstall OS I met with a screen asking me to install Sierra onto one of two drives: ‘Machintosh HD - Data’ and ‘Update’.

This slightly confused me as I was only expecting to see one drive here but it appears the ‘Update’ drive comes through Big Sur. Ignoring that I tried to install to ‘Machintosh HD - Data’ and was met with the error in the attached picture.

I wondered if you’d seen this before? The only fix for this I could find online was to not use a wireless keyboard, which of course I am as that’s the one that ships with the iMac. Surely this can’t be the solution to this? I can get my hands on a wired keyboard if necessary but I can’t imagine that’s the solution.

I also attempted an install to the ‘Update’ drive which also gave the same error message.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
