Three scanners, no luck. Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345).

M1 OS14.3.1. Driver installed. Install ok. Added scanner to Printers and Scanners. It's there, in list. Recognizes the scanner, sort of, but can't communicate with it, either via Canon Scanner Utility, Image Capture or other scanner apps (that recognize the scanner but can't communicate with it). Same results with three different scanners from different manufacturers. Scanners worked great with older Mac and OS. Are there ANY scanners I can buy that will work with this thing?

The individual scanner drivers need to be for the specific operating system (e.g. 14) as earlier drivers may install ok. but be completely incompatible. True of vendor scanning software, and the scanner may need very specific drivers (ICA) to be recognized by Apple's Image Capture.

When posting here about scanner issues, it is of value to you and us that you state the specific scanner vendor and product model. Are the scanners in question supported by Apple's built-in AirPrint as USB devices, or supported by Hamrick's VueScan Professional — where VueScan specifically states for the particular scanner that it can be used without any vendor drivers or software needed?

Last Fall, I purchased a Canon LiDE 400 scanner which is natively supported by Apple's AirPrint (via USB) and by VueScan Professional (which I have owned since 2010). I did not install any Canon software from the accompanying DVD, and the scanner was detected by macOS 14.3.1 and works fine. Not bad for an $89USD flatbed scanner.

As I said, don't use Canon software. I certainly do not. It is doubtful that Canon even makes current LiDE 300 drivers for Sonoma. The LiDE 300 and 400 scanners are natively supported by Apple's AirPrint using just a USB-cable. You need to remove the travel plug on the bottom of the scanner before attempting use.

Apple's Image Capture application and VueScan Professional can both see the scanner once it has been added to the Printers & Scanners panel in Sonoma's Settings.

I didn't bother to post the VueScan Professional recognition screen capture for my LiDE 400.

Too complicated a rabbit hole to go into completely. I purchased a Canon LiDE 300. Doesn't work at all. Yes, it appears in Printers and Scanners list. Yes, it even appears as a source in VueScan. But no communication. Canon Utility can't locate it. Canon driver installed (although it appeared as a Source in VueScan without the drivers installed). Image Capture and Preview can't locate it. Tried the same scanner on an older laptop. Same issue. It's there but it isn't. Go for LiDE 400? I'm willing to make that attempt. That'll be the fourth scanner I've tried to get to work with either VueScan, SilverFast...like I said...rabbit hole. This stuff reminds me of the late 1990s. Thanks for the reply.

I finally got it to work. I don't know why. I did all of the things...your screen shots were identical to mine. Been using VueScan since 2000, never an issue. Various scanners. Walked away. Hours later, came back. Gave it one more try. It worked. Did nothing different. I wish this could be instructive for someone else, but I'm still baffled. Thanks again.
