I once type à la française in an English text and now every time I type an ‘a’ it suggests an ‘à’. For instance when I typed the first ‘a’ it suggested ‘à item’.
I have removed the French dictionary.

I don’t know if you have your French key board disabled. To switch key board languages press and hold the little word icon in the bottom right. I don’t know if this will help but it might be worth trying!
thanks JoshuaTheCheese. I know about the world icon and use it to switch between languages. I think the problem started when I quoted some French in an English WhatsApp and to get the accent on that occasion I held the ‘a’ key until it offered me all the options and then I chose ‘à’.
I have disabled the French dictionary to see if that will help. I’m mystified.
