Open finder. Navigate to the location of the file. Do not choose a file by using the recent documents list. Navigate to the actual location where you saved the file on your drive.
Odds are it no longer exists there. It has been moved or deleted. You have been using a shortcut to attempt to open a recently used file that no longer exists.

Thank you for your reply. The file is visible in Excel but will not open. The message appears over the file.
The file was moved or deleted since last opened in Excel. Find the file then open the file from there rather than from the file list in Excel.
Re you trying to open it from Finder? Sounds like you’re trying to open a file from the recents list in Excel and the file no longer exists in the location it was in the last time you opened it.
