Emails not syncing between iPhone and iMac

I use apple mail on both devices. When I delete an email on one device, it is not deleted on the other What do I need to do?

POP based emails will not sync. The only way to make sure they sync is to use server based folders such as found on iCloud, Exchange, and IMAP. Stored on my Mac folders will not sync.
