Message bubble flashing blue and green

I sent an imessage to another iphone user from my iphone. While it was sending it flashed blue and green and finshed as a green "text message" and also said "deliver". Like a normal imessage but again the message bubble was green and said text message. I only experience this with a specific iphone user. It doesn't happen every time but it has happened enough for me to question it.
