the easiest way is to use apple's built in app Time Machine. please see Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support.
additionally, you may want to employ more than one backup. three backups are often recommended here. you can use two different forms of backup as well as keeping an off site backup incase of fire, theft, or natural disaster.
