Google meet can't access contacts, mic or camera

I have Iphone X and iOS 16.7.5. Google Meet is version 233.0.49018. When starting the app the first time I am asked to give access the contacts, mic and camera and I answer "Yes". In Settings it is also shown that the components have access.

When I open Google Meet no contacts are shown. When I receive a call the ring signal gets through but when I answer the call nothing happens. I suspect that the app has not access to contacts, mic or camera.

Then I'm completely out of ideas. If it works on your wife's iPhone running the same iOS version, it's not an iOS issue. Have you tried a Forced Restart on your iPhone?

Try this and if no joy contact Apple Support directly.

Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

Do you have a VPN on your iPhone? They can cause all sorts of issues if you do. Turn it off at a minimum and better yet, get rid of it. They are useless on iPhone.

I tried the forced restart, but it didn't make any change.

Normally the contacts shall be shown in Meet and that is not the case in my phone. But there is also a search function and when I use that the email address is shown for the person I searched. So this means there is access to the contacts, they are not just shown. So now I am more focused on Meet, but don't get any help from there.

Hi again, In order to isolate the misbehaviour more I tried to start a meeting from my wife's phone and I attended the meeting from my phone. That worked fine. So it is a direct video call between the phones that doesn't work. No you will probably say it points towards Google and I'm not sure either. I only had the idea it could have something to do with the access to contacts, mic and camera since all of these does not work when I try to make a direct call. I don't see any contacts when I try to start a call and there is no picture or sound when someone calls.

I've done that. But I only get the same advice to check the settings or reinstall the app, things that doesn't help. Since the app works for most people and also for me in the past I can also suspect something in the Apple software that may be the problem. Can anything else affect the access to contacts, mic and camera? I was adviced to check Settings > General > Restrictions but can't find Restrictions under General.

Yes, I understand that differ in the way it is started since forced one is used when an ordinary restart won't work. But will there be any difference after the restart? And will some data get lost? I'm afraid of that.

I contacted the Apple support by chat as you suggested, but get no help whatsoever. They first suggested to reset all network IDs and passwords, which I denied. Then they suggested to turn on the airplane mode, which I also questioned. After a lot of irrelevant questions and proposed actions they finally advised me to contact the app developer, which I already have told them I done with no result. So even though the conversation with you gave no direct result, it was much better than the chat with Apple support, which was totally useless.

I'm afraid I have to live without the Google Meet app which is bad since some people I communicated with has no other option for video calls.

I have contacted the Google Meet Community as well, but no help so far and I doubt I will get any. I think the only thing to hope for is if the error is corrected just by accident in a future version but then I have for sure given up. If there were proper error messages it would be easier to find the reason for the malfunction, but nowadays there are either no error messages at all or totally worthless ones like "Something went wrong" which you already know. It gives no information whatsoever.
