Bar Tabs in Pages?

I use MSWord most of the time. I use text alignment features often (but in greater detail necessarily than the outline feature can afford). To compensate I then insert the bar tab for easy access for my eyes to find parallel structures. Does Pages have that feature or anything close to it that is fixed rather than my having to insert freehandedly lines and/or arrows? I would prefer to use Pages, but this feature is essential to my work. The bar tab lines do not appear in Pages when I open documents created in MSWord either.

Here's a MS Support site paragraph on the "bar tab".

When you set a bar tab stop, a vertical bar line appears where you set the tab stop (you don't need to press the TAB key). A bar tab is similar to strikethrough formatting, but it runs vertically through your paragraph at the location of the bar tab stop. Like other types of tabs, you can set a bar tab stop before or after you type the text of your paragraph.

As far as I know, there is no equivalent functionality in Pages. You could explore "Guides" and see if you could get by on just using them. In Pages > Preferences, enable the Vertical Ruler and pull a guide line off the ruler to the position where you need it.

Aligning the text is not the issue, but I want to insert a line at the left side of the margin of the text that may extend several lines showing the subordination of ideas to each other. This may sound like my version of the organizational chart but without the boxes. I want this line to be consistent at the same place in the text.

Are you yet familiar with the bar tab I referred to in MSWord? If you do not know what this is, then you will be trying to help answer questions that I am not asking. I tried to take a picture of the icon that Word uses to insert this character, but I could not paste the picture here for you all to see.

Please relax. Go back to my last post and read what I said about what I quoted from the MS site. I quoted the MS site so you would know exactly how I understood your question after researching it, and so that Peter and fruhulda would too.

There are many, many, features in Word that don't exist in Pages. I don't know when the Bar Tab appeared in Word, but I haven't used Word seriously in many years, so it was all new to me. That's why I didn't recognize your problem as originally stated. Apparently no one else did either because it was just sitting there for longer than normal. If you are seriously dependent on things like the Bar Tab in Word, then you would be better served by staying with Office/Word. If you can let go of some of the frillier features in Word you may be rewarded with a few nice surprises in Pages.

Good luck,

Jerry
