Should I buy a new iMac or replace the hard drive in my 27 inch 2017 iMac?

I am getting the spinning color wheel a lot. Slow loading of pages. A “speed test” showed the drive was failing. Should I take it in for replacement or buy new? It is a beautiful 27 inch 2017 iMac.

iMac 27″, macOS 10.13

I have the same unit. I run occasionally on other systems from an external SSD. I recommend you contact Customer Support at OWC (MacSales.com) to get their recommendation of which of their external SSDs would work best with your particular Mac year and model, workflow requirement and budget. OWC is considered the premier hardware supplier for Macs by most of the experienced contributors here.

If you go this way you can take the external SSD with you easily when you do upgrade to a newer iMac.

Some food for thought: As Mal-S pointed out you can get a Mac Mini with 16 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD for $1299 and a LG or Samsung 32" monitor w/speakers for $300 - $360. Note: most of these monitors do not include cameras so if you need one you'll have to get a USB camera or use your iPhone.

At the moment you can’t get an M series silicon iMac with a 27” screen so if you were to buy a new Mac similar to your current iMac then a Mac Mini with a 27” monitor would be the option to consider. Remember you can’t use the old one as a monitor. If you are looking for an easier solution to tide you over you can add a bootable SSD and boot from that, and if you decide to go down this route try searching the group as this topic has been discussed many times. If you decide to upgrade to a 24” iMac you can attach one other monitor to it and you could invest in a 27” monitor if it is mission critical.

I have a 2017 iMac and its startup time is about 28 seconds on the internal SSD and a bit more when booting from an external SSD, like 35 - 40 seconds.

Either you have some software that is messing up your performance or you have a rotational hard drive that is failing.

To verify either cause download and run Etrecheck.  Before running in Settings/Privacy give the app full disk access:
