One must save a file in Pages before it will enable autosave for the current and future document edits.

Pages is not a Word clone and it must translate an opened Word document into Pages internal .pages document format. As the original Word document is not editable in Pages, one must incur another translation from Pages to Word docx via the File menu Export To panel. There are features in Word and Pages that are not interchangeable and Apple does not guarantee accuracy of any translation event.

If you are routinely sharing Word documents, it may be advisable to not get lit up with translation anomalies and stick with a current Word for Mac and its native document edits.

There is no toolbar icon/button for saving in Pages. Use the File menu (File > Save) or the keyboard command ⌘ + S… Either will give you a dialog box allowing you to name the document & choose a location & click the Save button. Once you have named a file, autosave will be activated for that document.
