Camera stopped working after updating macOS to Sonoma 14.4 (23E214) .

Camera stopped working after updating to macOS Sonoma 14.4 (23E214). Any of the apps such as Facetime, Foto Booth, MS Teams, Zoom etc., cant load the video from the built in camera.

There are no error printed to the screen except for this one: "FaceTime has not received any video from the connected camera."

In system information page I can see the camera details, it means the system reads correctly the camera as hardware.

Any help how to solve this?

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 14.4

I run apple diagnostics tool (Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support) and got the following message:

and according to Apple diagnostic reference codes it means:

NDC001: There may be an issue with the camera. Contact Apple or take your computer to an AASP or Apple Store to learn which service and support options are available.

If all else fails give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

This is what did:

"I had this problem with a MacBook and Sonoma 14.5 and I got it resolved by entering into the Recovering mode, doing the tests and then restarting. I didn't delete or install anything.

To enter the recovery mode, shut down the laptop, turn it on and immediately keep pressing the letter "D" on the keyboard and follow the instructions to start the tests."

Hello everyone! Yesterday I bought my macbook pro 14-inch m3 pro (11 cores) 512Gb mem.

Then I installed the latest version of OS Sonoma 14.4.1 and later I discovered my camera stopped working. Then I followed instruction to re-install Sonoma 14.3.1 and as a result my Camera started to work again. I agree that is software issue. I'm not going to update my mac till Apple fixes this terrible bug.

Make an appointment at the nearest Apple Genius Bar and take it in for a free diagnostic evaluation. Since it's under warranty if it's a defective camera they will replace it for you.

Be sure to make a full and current backup of your user data before you take it in. Apple will want to erase the disk and install a pristine system to verify it's not software related.

The built in camera is not working.

The System Information > Camera is showing.

When I open QuickTime Player app, it's not opening - no error message. It' just the icon in the dock.

Please help.
Thank you.

Do you mean you are you not seeing Quicktime Player in the menu bar, next to the Apple symbol?

Assuming you do, then Quicktime Player is running.

From the File menu, choose New Movie Recording. What happens?

Firstly, ensure that the camera is not being blocked by any application or system settings. Go to System Preferences, then Security & Privacy, and click on the Privacy tab. From there, select Camera on the left sidebar and ensure that the checkbox next to the apps you want to use the camera with (such as FaceTime, Foto Booth, etc.) is checked.

If the camera permissions are set correctly and the issue persists, you can try resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your MacBook Pro. To do this, shut down your MacBook Pro, then press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds. Release the button, then turn on your MacBook Pro again.

If the problem still persists after resetting the SMC, you can also try resetting the NVRAM (non-volatile random-access memory) or PRAM (Parameter RAM). To do this, restart your MacBook Pro and immediately press and hold the Option, Command, P, and R keys simultaneously. Keep holding the keys until you hear the startup sound for the second time, then release them.

After trying these steps, check if the camera issue has been resolved. If not, it might be worth considering reaching out to Official Apple Support for further assistance or visiting an Apple Store for a closer look at the hardware.

Sure. Here are the steps. You will need two storage devices - one for installation (about 15Gb) and one for backup (your system size).

  1. Make a backup of your system with time machine on your backup storage device.
  2. Download Sonoma 14.3.1. Open a terminal and type there:
softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 14.3.1

3. Make an installation disk. Insert your storage device for installation with YourDriveName (replace it in the command) and type in the terminal window:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sonoma.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/YourDriveName\ macOS --nointeraction

4 Erase HD. Reboot your mac and hold power button to get into options menu. Go to Disk Utility and erase Macintosh HD. Make sure you have the backup already.

5 Install OS from the drive you made before. Insert you installation drive, reboot and select "Install MacOS Sonoma". Attention! Skip the update! Before starting the installation connect to WiFi.

6 Restore the system from time machine after installation complete.

Important. If there will be some troubles with apps like Steam or any games, install Rosetta and all will be fine.

/usr/sbin/softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-license
