Google Workspace doesn't work on Safari? Is Safari becoming obsolete?

I'm running into a lot of problems setting up my organization's Google Workspace -- and all of them seem to be that it's not compatible with Safari.

Google Workspace support just told me that I have to use Chrome to upload a to our Workspace! The upload doesn't work on Firefox either.

Is Safari becoming obsolete?

Google's official answer regarding the support of Safari with Google Workspace is this:

“Works well with Google Workspace, but doesn't support:

  • Offline access to Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides
  • Desktop notifications in Gmail
  • Accessibility tools (for example, screen readers)

We support the current and the previous version of Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge. Each time a new browser version is released, we begin supporting that version and stop supporting the third most recent version.

For accessibility, only Chrome is supported.”

Your post signature implies that you're still on macOS 12.7? Is this correct?

As of this post, macOS Sonoma 14.4 with Safari 17.4 is the most current version available.

Why would Safari be obsolete?

Their support probably want you to use their product with their web browser.

Google is frankly desperate to get people to use their Chrome product. They derive nearly all their revenue by selling the personal information they harvest from your Mac by installing it. A number of recent changes by Apple is making it increasingly difficult for them to hide that fact.

You didn't really think Google is free, did you?

Buy Chromebooks for your organization. If you are committed to using Google it makes no sense to use Macs.
