Apple TV HDMI control option is greyed out and can't be changed to turn it on

This device is connected to a Yamaha receiver which connects to a Sony TV. Both of those devices allow for HDMI control and I've had it working so that turning on (or off) the Apple TV turns on the television and the receiver. But recently that has stopped working and the only difference seems to be that the option to turn on HDMI control (found in Remotes and Devices -> Control TVs and Receivers) is shown as "Off" and is grayed out so I cannot turn it on. The Apple TV has the most recent firmware (as do the TV and receiver but neither of those has changed for quite a while). Out of desperation, I reset the Apple TV to factory settings and was disappointed to find that the option is still grayed out.

Does anyone have any suggestions (please don't direct me to the standard Apple blurb on how to set this up, I've been through all of that several times). I'm beginning to think that the device itself is faulty
