How do I record my screen on Mac with sound?

I'm in need of assistance to record the screen on my Mac with the sound included. I've attempted to use the native Quick Time screen recording tool on macOS, but I seem to be missing something crucial when it comes to capturing both the screen and the internal audio simultaneously. My primary goal is to create tutorial videos, so capturing clear audio alongside the video is essential.

Could anyone guide me through the process of recording my screen with sound on a Mac, or recommend any reliable software (preferably free or low-cost) that could make this easier? I'm looking for a solution that can record both the screen and audio without compromising quality.

I appreciate any tips, software recommendations, or step-by-step instructions you can share. Your expertise will significantly help me streamline my workflow for creating educational content. Thank you in advance for your support and guidance.

QuickTime, by itself, can only record audio from the built-in mic during a screen recording.

If you have other needs (for example, to record a video that has its own audio) you will need a utility to route the audio to QuickTime. I usually recommend Loopback for this.

However if you want to go the free (and somewhat involved) path you could use Blackhole Audio + create a multi-output device in Audio Midi Setup. Also, for reference, see Blackhole's article "Multi-Output Device."

In my case, I use Screenflow instead. It records screen video + audio and has a built-in editor. I use it to capture streaming video. It's a very solid app with many features. That way I don't have to cobble together a bunch of pieces to make QT work and still end up needing to edit the results with another app.

I am using Aiseesoft Screen Recorder, and it has a default option to record Mac screen with sound. This software allows you to capture both the screen and audio simultaneously, including system sounds and microphone input. This makes it a great tool for creating tutorials, presentations, or recording video calls, among other uses.

Step 1: Launch Aiseesoft Screen Recorder on your Mac and click on "Video Recorder" for screen recording with sound.

Step 2: Ensure the "System Sound" option is enabled if you want to capture audio playing on your Mac. If you also want to record your voice or external sounds, make sure the "Microphone" option is turned on.

Step 3: Once you're ready, click the "REC" button to start recording. There will be a short countdown before the recording begins. During the recording, you can use the control bar to pause or stop the recording.

Step 4: After stopping the recording, Aiseesoft Screen Recorder will show a preview window where you can review your video. Click on "Save" to store the recording on your Mac. Choose the desired folder, and you're done!

There are a few easy steps you can follow to record your Mac screen with sound:

  1. Open QuickTime Player on your Mac.

2. Click on File in the menu bar and select New Screen Recording.

3. Click on the arrow next to the Record button and select Internal Microphone.

4. Click on the Record button and start recording your screen.

5. When you're done, click on the Stop button in the menu bar.

6. Save your recording by clicking on File in the menu bar and selecting Save.

If you're still having issues with recording sound, you may need to adjust your audio settings. Go to System Preferences > Sound > Input and select Internal Microphone. Make sure the volume is turned up and the input level is set correctly.

If you're looking for a more comprehensive solution, there are plenty of screen recording software options available. Here is a recommendation:

OBS Studio - free and open-source, with plenty of advanced features for professional-level recordings.

No matter what software you choose, make sure to test it out and adjust your settings for optimal audio and video quality.

Ah, the classic screen recording struggle on a Mac! Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Luckily, I've got just the solution for you. So, you're aiming to record your screen along with some sweet, sweet internal audio for those tutorial vids. I feel you – clear audio is key for keeping your audience engaged and informed.

Let's talk about QuickTime. It's the OG screen recording tool on macOS, but it does have its limitations. One of those is capturing internal audio alongside your screen – it's a bit of a no-go zone with QuickTime alone.

But fret not, my friend! There's a nifty workaround using a free piece of software called Soundflower. It's like the missing puzzle piece that completes the screen recording picture.

Soundflower was a great solution for this. But it was EOL'd back in 2015 and later resurrected by one of the original authors. The last update was 4 years ago for macOS BigSur 11.1 and as yet there is no version for Apple Silicon; for both reasons it is questionable if it would run on Ventura or Sonoma. This is just so people are informed before trying out Soundflower.

here's the method I use.

to record the mac's internal sound with quicktime (or also “shift-command-5”) you need additional software. i use the free BlackHole Virtual Audio Driver. then you can choose "BlackHole 2ch" in the recording options instead of "Built-in Microphone."

you will also need to set up a multi-output device in your audio MIDI setup utility to be able to both hear and record the internal audio at the same time.

to set up a multi-output device:

Open Audio MIDI Setup: (found in /Applications/Utilities)

hit the '+' button in the bottom left corner and select "Create Multi Output Device"

then in the panel that appears on the right, in the Multi-Output Device tab, select "Built-in Output" AND "BlackHole 2ch". (and, if you want, any of your other connected devices.)

once you do that, (and BEFORE recording) you can choose "BlackHole 2ch" or "Multi-Output Device" in your menubar "sound options".

to both hear the speakers and record the audio at the same time, choose "Multi-Output Device". before choosing multi-out, set the internal speakers' volume to a comfortable level first. you cannot control the volume once you are in multi-out mode.
