Suddenly all my files are covered with little blue marks. A blue dot between every word and a sign for every 'return' for another line to begin. These all serve no purpose - how do I get rid of them???
I am using an I-Mac 2017 running Ventura 13.6.1
It is getting very slow but Malwarebytes cannot find any problems in it.
My files are all written on Pages

I’ve never looked for it in Pages because I don’t need it in Pages.
I have to have it on in Word as the word spacing is always random widths.

You have Pages View menu : Show Invisibles on. You are seeing the blue dots for spaces, and the pilcrow ¶ symbol for paragraph marks (newlines). Just switch off Invisibles with shift+cmd+i (toggle).
There is a dedicated Pages Support Community for these types of questions regarding Pages, and a Pages User Guide for Mac to add additional knowledge to your Pages usage.
It is the Pages application that shows you those invisibles, not the operating system. A wrongly entered keyboard shortcut, or missed menu item in Pages can do it, but Pages does not enable invisibles by itself.
That has a ring of truth about it. In other words I accidentally pressed a sequence of unrelated keys that triggered the shortcut to 'show invisibles'. I tremble to think what I might trigger next: 'self-destruct I-Mac in 15 seconds' perhaps? (no answer required - thanks again Viking!)

That is the beauty of macOS and why documentation is sparse. It was designed to allow users to play around with it and not cause harm. It is not possible to destroy data without a confirmation (sometimes two).
Thanks Viking - worked a treat! I had never heard of 'invisibles' so could not imagine what was going on.
The under lying question is 'how did my idiot computer turn on Invisibles all by itself?' We hear a lot about Artificial Intelligence but it's the Artificial Stupidity that plagues me......
