Repeated internet failures after installing macOS 13.6.5

After this update Safari and Mail say that there is no internet connection, but Settings says internet is connected. iPad and other equipment connect to the internet as normal.

For 7 months I have booted successfully from an external SSD (for greatly improved boot speed) but retained macOS 13.5 on the internal Fusion Drive. I found that booting from the internal drive gave normal internet access.

I have twice reinstalled 13.6.5 on the external SSD, each time resulting in the same inability to access the internet. My data is very well backed up: 2 Time Machine drives plus 2 takeaway Carbon Copy Cloner drives plus a daily CCC backup to a separate internal drive volume.

It seems that the only installation version I can obtain is 13.6.5, I can’t find a way of obtaining 13.5 - any suggestions?

iPad, iPadOS 17

The only Full Versions of Ventura goes back to Venture 13.6.3

Maybe if you have SafetyNet enabled on the CCC there might still be a full version of Ventura 13.5 ?

softwareupdate --list-full-installers

Finding available software

Software Update found the following full installers:

* Title: macOS Ventura, Version: 13.6.5, Size: 11916934KiB, Build: 22G621, Deferred: NO

* Title: macOS Ventura, Version: 13.6.4, Size: 11912664KiB, Build: 22G513, Deferred: NO

* Title: macOS Ventura, Version: 13.6.3, Size: 11915962KiB, Build: 22G436, Deferred: NO

We're having the same issue. We use JAMF for MDM. Doesn't seem like any apple silicon macs are affected, just our 2017 Intels. Very frustrating as we install a ton of software on these macs so wiping them and re-imaging isn't ideal.

Our macs get proper IP configuration, but no internet access, however the internet works in safe mode. The logs show theast activity on the macs was the 13.6.5 update.

Sorry for my delayed response, I am grateful for your help.

I am convinced the problem is macOS 13.6.5. The very same 13.5 installation file that I used successfully last August refused to run under 13.6.5.

Twice I have reinstalled 13.6.5 from the internet - so my hardware does connect, but 13.6.5, once installed prevents connection.

To do what I think you were trying to do and correct me firstly if your would 😎

Was Ventura 13.6.5 Already installed On the computer

Did you attempt to run the Ventura Full Version 13.5 Over the Existing Newer Version 13.6.5 ?

If yes, sorry but one can not Install an Older Versions Over the top of a newer version in the hope of Downgrading

To achieve this, would require Wiping the Drive to Zero ( Intel Computer ) and booting from an Bootable Installer of Ventura 13.5

On Apple Silicon Computers M1 / M2 / M3 , the process is somewhat more complicated but doable

Yeah, like PRP said you cant use an older installer to install over a newer version of the OS. And you can lay 13.6.5 over itself all day long but it doesn't appear to be fixing the broken internet issue. You need to wipe the disk before you reinstall next time you boot into internet recovery. That will fix the issue. It will also erase all your data.

I dont think theres a problem with that. Something about the update process broke the internet.
Once you wipe and reinstall with 13.6.5 the internet will be fine. We've done a dozen of them this week.

In that specific environment and possibly an MDM serve involved in the equation

Add in Corporate Requirements often mean using Third Party Security Software

Sorry, all bets are off as to the Ventura 13.6.5 actually Broke Internet Connection

In a Non MDM environment and No Third Party Security Software

Have updated 1 M1, 2 M2 machines from every single version of Ventura right through to and including 13.6.5 - No Broken Internet Connection here

Since that time to now, have upGraded each earlier to Sonoma 14.4 and still no issue

Add in a M3 which started with Sonoma 14.3.1 on first boot and upgraded to 14.4 - also no Internet Issues

Thanks for all your responses. I have been on this problem for nearly a week and have tried all these remedies, including erasing the internal HDD, formatting to APFS, and installing from last August’s full 13.5, which I used at that time to set up the ability to boot from the external SSD. Nothing doing.

So I have ordered a new Mac Mini and hope it will give a few years respite until the Apple creeping obsolescence starts to bite again.

Thanks again.
