What is the best way to remove duplicate files from my MacBook Pro? I am running out of space on my hard drive

My 1 TB Hard drive is getting full and I can no longer update my operating system. Wondering if there are features in the operating system to manage duplicate files, photographs, etc. as well as clean up the hard drive?

MacBook Pro 15″, 10.12

The only way to remove duplicate files is to select and delete them. If your HD gets too full your Mac will stop functioning and then you will have a real problem. I suggest getting an external disk for storage. It will be easily connected using a vendor provided USB cable. You may need to format it using Disk Utility (not a maintenance app provided by the vendor). Next copy files onto it. Then delete those files from your HD to create needed empty storage.
