How to enable HDR on external monitor on Sonoma 14.4

When I go to the display setting on macOS 14.4 there is no option to turn HDR on/off for my external 4k monitor that supports refresh rates up to 144 Hz. When I change the refresh rate to anything below 120 Hz (like 98, 60, etc.), the option for HDR magically appears. I did not have this issue on previous versions of macOS. I had the option to turn HDR on/off even on a 144 Hz refresh rate.

While I was writing this post I realized that the problem is not just the refresh! Although my monitor is 4k, currently I am using 2560 x 1440 as the resolution. Changing it to 4k or 1080p makes the HDR option appear regardless of the refresh rate (I can have HDR on at 4k/FHD at 144 Hz). I am so confused. What does having the option to turn HDR on or off have to do with the resolution you set for your monitor?

You may find that restarting your computer helps if you have an Apple Silicon (newer than 2020 machine).

Older Macs than Apple Silicon, Reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support.

SwitchResX and DisplayConfigX are third party utilities that show more finite resolution options that Apple doesn't show in its own display. EasyRes is another one, which adds a menubar icon to make those modifications.

I haven't tried it in your scenario, so I can't say if that will work to help you.
