For some reason, when I save a picture of the screen with command shift 4, it gets saved in: Homefolder/Library/Containers/Safari/Data/TMP/Webkitdropdestination-A08eyegV. This is, obviously, absurd. How do I get them to save in desktop again? I tried Options in the command shift 5 menu and it is still set for desktop.

Try to change the location to another folder (Documents, for instance) and test. If it works, change the location back to Desktop and test.

To change the default save location, you'll want to change it using the Screenshot app (Applications-->Utilities-->Screenshot).
As I said, the Options in the screenshot app is set to save on desktop. I assume that's where a command shift 5 whole screen screenshot would save. But the command ship 4 screenshots, where I get to select just part of the screen, are not being saved to my desktop.
Oh my gosh - it worked! I changed the location and then changed it back to desktop and all is well. Thank you so much!
