Protection for IPhone during solar eclipse

I live in Vermont in the direct path of the solar eclipse. I can’t find any recommendations from Apple to protect my Iphone 15 pro. I contacted support and the tech didn’t really know what I was talking about. Millions will use their phones am I missing something?

You can buy a special case on Amazon and get a camera filter 52mm to fit the case. I went with a celestial filter for my phone and camera. The filter that comes with the case I wouldn't trust it as I couldn't find it on the approved list.

This is a link I got from the NASA site where you can find camera lenses and phone protection from approved and certified companies and sellers. https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters

I hope this helps!

Yes you are missing something, UV won't damage the phone, you are being bombarded by UV all the time.

Not putting a filter on it is a very bad idea, but you don't have to take my word for it if you don't want to.

Go ahead and don't use a filter on your phone or camera, just don't come back in here after you've burned a hole in the CMOS sensor and complain about it. I can't for the life of me understand how you think this is a good idea.

"iPhones don’t come with a warning saying don’t film the sun."

Yup, they also don't tell you not to take a blowtorch to it or microwave it, or put it the garbage disposal either.

At some point they assume you have some common sense and don't need to be spoon fed every single warning that could possibly happen.

Not quite sure what sort of protection for the iPhone that you are looking for during a Solar Eclipse. As you already know, a Solar Eclipse happens when the Moon passed between the Earth and the Sun. That event will cast the shadow of the Moon on some parts of the Earth during the Eclipse. You can protect your iPhone like you do everyday without any special consideration for the Eclipse.

Am I missing something?

EDIT: I just read Kurt’s response above and now I understand the question. My apologies.

I’m curious about this also and a bit confused. My eyes are biological and will get damaged from UV rays. can the solid state technology that makes up the iPhone camera gets damaged by UV rays. iPhones don’t come with a warning saying don’t film the sun.

the aperture and all things photography come into question about getting good pics but I’m thinking no filter is best for the iPhone , digital cameras. maybe I’m missing something..:

I hear the fear mongering but I’m technical curious. iPhones do not have a physical shutter (right?). So if filming a hour long eclipse is going to damage it , what happens if I keep it on a table in the sun? Or does the device have to be in use to be damaged.

you might be right and if nervous I’d put a filer on it, but seems like your just sounding off. And yes SLR or high end camera is a different story.

I’m the one who posted this and I’m not going into the why and how’s but I’m not going to be rude and nasty either. The sun is much stronger during eclipse which is why we must wear glasses. The intense sun can also fry the components in our phone. So take a pair of eclipse glasses and cut out a lens. Tape it over the camera on your phone and you have a filter.

I got this answer off eclipse groups on FB.
