Why do I have a security delay from trying to change my Apple ID when I am at my house?

Why did it just tell me I can’t use my phone for an hour because I needed to change my Apple ID because I forgot it? Does that mean my phone is hacked?

iPhone 15, iOS 17

I just don’t understand why they started the security delay or whatever it is (I’m not text savvy whatsoever in case you didn’t notice) up in the first place though when all I was trying to do was reset my Apple ID cuz I forget to write it down & then I forget it all the time.

I finally made a password sheet so I could write all my passwords down and not forget them anymore because I literally have to reset every password every time I go into an account I don’t know if it’s my ADHD? I’m just trying to get more organized and stop losing things like passwords and my phone even when it’s in my hand. 🤦🏼‍♀️

They started because there were a rash of incidents where a thief would “shoulder surf” someone using an iPhone in public to see their passcode, then steal the phone, and use the passcode to change the user’s Apple ID password, thus allowing them to steal all content on the phone and in iCloud, to disable the phone, to hold it and its data for ransom, and to disabled Activation Lock so they could either use or resell it as a working iPhone.

It has been reported many times, nobody knows quite why but it seems to be a tightening up of security for some people in some situations, and nothing to do with Stolen Device Protection.

That makes sense. It’s still frustrating though since I’m at my house alone, but I live sometime asking questions if my phone happened to be hacked what should I look for or my iPad because my ex knows all this text stuff and he knows that I know none of it, so he can put some kind of spyware on my stuff! Any help at all would be appreciated, but don’t feel like you have to answer. I was just wondering about the original question. And thank you guys so much for helping!
