App Store is asking for an Apple ID I’ve never had

Apps are tied to the Apple ID that was used to download them. If they were downloaded using another Apple ID, you will be prompted to use that ID to update them.

It’s surprising that the Apple ID is not one you know. Could it be the one from the previous owner?

In any case, to prevent the issue, delete these apps and download them again with your own Apple ID. Be careful, though, the apps may no longer be available from the App Store. Double check before proceeding.

It sounds to me like there aren't any apps on there currently. Nothing to delete. ;-) You are right, though, in that there may have been apps on the old device from a previous user. Since a "new" iPhone will require re-downloading all apps again when setting up, it will also want that old ID to do so.

Nellie: If you want those apps you will need to download them with your ID. Go to the App Store and "buy" them.

Excellent point; I agree with you after rereading the OP.

There is a slim possibility that your Apple ID for iCloud and your Apple ID for your purchases are different. This is rare, though. Go to Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases and sign out. Then, sign in again with your own Apple ID.
