Why are there so many backups of my Notes in Gmail?

My Apple notes are connected to my Gmail account. I want it connected to my (Gmail account so that I can access the info while I'm on my Gmail, without having to log into iCloud.) For some reason, my Gmail makes dozens and dozens of backups of my notes. I can't figure out whether or not I can change settings in my iPhone or in Gmail to prevent this from happening. Is there something I can do to minimize the backing up of notes?

iPhone 15 Pro, iOS 17

Same is happening with me. It happens several times per day (and I do not use or update notes that often). Anytime I search through Mail on my phone for something, almost invariably there are multiple instances of that word or phrase showing up in my notes, and they completely obscure the results I am actually looking for. I went to settings>mail>accounts and tried to turn off "Notes" but it gave me a warning message that says "Turn off notes: Are you sure you want to continue? All Gmail notes will be removed from your iPhone." That is obviously not what I want - I simply want it to stop backing up my iPhone notes into my Gmail account. I'm wondering if I had authored them all initially in the iCloud folder instead of the Gmail folder, would that have prevented this issue? I'm going to start making all of my Notes going forward in the iCloud folder instead. Hoping an Apple Genius has something to contribute here!!
