Accessing SMS messages from damaged iphone

My iPhone 13 pro battery expanded and I cannot get it to turn on. I need to download my sms messages and visual voice-mail messages to print for court. How can I do this with the phone unavailable to use? I feel like the answer is icloud, but what if my backup was off? Is there a way to back up and retrieve the data on the phone itself?

When iCloud Messages is Enabled:

  1. Accessing Messages on Another Device: If you've turned on iCloud Messages on your iPhone 11, your messages are automatically stored in iCloud. To access them on another Apple device:
    1. Sign in to the same Apple ID you're using on your iPhone 11.
    2. Enable iCloud Messages on that device.
  2. Benefits: With iCloud Messages on, your messages stay up-to-date across all your Apple devices. Any new message you send or receive will instantly appear on all devices signed in with the same Apple ID.

When iCloud Messages is Disabled:

  1. Backup Importance: If you haven't enabled iCloud Messages, your iPhone messages are not automatically stored in iCloud. To ensure you don't lose them, creating a regular backup is crucial.
  2. Backup Options: You have two main backup options for your iPhone 11:
    1. iCloud Backup: This option stores a complete backup of your device, including messages, in iCloud storage.
    2. Computer Backup: You can connect your iPhone to a Mac or PC and use iTunes or Finder to create a backup. This backup will be stored on your computer.
  3. Restore from backup on another device using iCloud or iTunes/Finder
