Screen goes black when viewing photos

I recently bought an iPhone 11 Pro Max and sometimes when I am trying to view a photo in the Photos app the screen goes black. The phone hasn't locked, and I have to lock it, unlock and then try and quickly swipe up to get back to the home page before it goes black again. This also sometimes happens when I'm on Instagram - usually when I try to watch a video from a grid post (stories are fine). I have installed the latest software updates. If anyone has any ideas on what might be going wrong I would really appreciate it. Thank you!
