Can't set-up gmail account in Apple Mail on an old iPad

I have an early iPad that I wish to use to receive Gmail on via the Apple Mail app. However, when I go through the entire set-up process and then try to access my Gmail, I get a message saying the user name or password are incorrect. However, I know they are correct. I was able to set-up my mac.com account, as well as a Cox email account, and they work fine, but Gmail doesn't. I did some research and read something about needing a totally separate user name and password than the ones I use on my Mac desktop and iPhone. Is that true? If so, how do I go about doing that, or if not, is there a way to access my Gmail without going through Google on my browser?

Be aware that some email providers now require the use of App Specific Passwords when accessing mail over IMAP or POP3. If this applies to your email account, you will need to generate a unique password for your iPad email account - that will differ from your normal Account Password. As examples - AOL, Yahoo, Google, Microsoft all use App Specific Passwords when using anything other than their own email client Apps.

If you need to generate an App Specific Password, you’ll need to log-in to your Mail Providers account management webpage - using a web browser - and generate the Password from the appropriate account security page.

Google has strengthened its security and the older operating systems are no longer directly compatible.

To connect your Gmail account on your iPad:

  1. First of all, delete the Gmail account.
  2. Then, you will have to create an application password: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en.
  3. Finally, when you add the Gmail account in Mail on your iPad, choose "Other" and not "Google". Fill in your email address and application password.

Thanks 6x6 and the other responders. I followed your instructions, choosing "Other" rather than "Google," created an app-specific password, added that, and filled in my other information. However, when I go to my Apple Mail account, although it shows the gmail account in the sidebar, no email still comes into the Inbox, nor is there anything showing in the other boxes. Are there additional settings in the set-up I am missing? Or did I include something that shouldn't be there? I did add "imap.gmail.com" and "smtp.gmail.come" in the incoming and outgoing mail server boxes.
