Can't send email on any of my apple devices.

I purchased a new imac and ipad pro and have added my email account to the mail app. I can get all my emails BUT CAN NOT SEND! I've deleted and re added the account several times to without success. I receive various error messages one being the smtp outgoing server does not recognize the mail account! The out going server name (mobile.charter.net) is correct! I've called Apple support and Spectrum and they have been unable to find a solution! Additionally I've rebooted my modem and router hoping it would solve the problem ... it did not!

As it turned out there was a firewall set up on the imac! However, that was not the problem we not be able to send email! The problem was the Spectrum mail account password needed to be reset. Once that was done and the mail account on 3 devices were updated BOTH SEND AND RECEIVE WORKED! Cannot explain why I could receive mail with the original email but not send! I suspect it was something to do with the smtp outgoing server. The amount of time spent on this was ridiculous!

One simple test that I use is to use the ncat command in the Terminal.

To test Charter's SMTP server, you would enter this command: ncat mobile.charter.net 587

A successful reply would start with: 220

FWIW, I just tried using this command with the iCloud SMTP servers and it was successful. However, when I tried the same test with the Charter SMTP server, I never got a response. This could mean, at least, three things:

  1. mobile.charter.net is incorrect << Charter uses different servers for different domains.
  2. Charter blocks ncat requests.
  3. The Charter SMTP server is down.
