If you find you can’t sign in, reset your password, or receive verification codes, you can request account recovery (go to this document: How to use account recovery when you can’t reset your Apple ID password - Apple Support ) to regain access to your account. Account recovery might take a few days or longer, depending on the specific account information you can provide to verify your identity. One tip to using account recovery it to look for options in small blue letters beneath the normal log-in items if you cannot complete the requested information.

Thank you for the feedback.

The point is:

I do know the Apple ID. The Apple ID is an old email address that doesn't exist any longer.

I do not know the password associated with the Apple ID. Resetting the password is not possible because the instructions on how to reset the password are being sent to the email address that doesn't exist any longer.

If the Apple ID is old and the reset instructions are going to your email that indicated you are using the older security feature called 2 step verification.

If you didn’t have a recovery email set or are not given the option to have the reset steps sent to the recovery email you won’t be able to gain access to this Apple ID again unless you can sign into the email instructions are sent to.
