Connecting iPad Air 3 to projector with lightning digital av adapter

When connecting to an Epsom projector via an Apple Lightning to Digital AV Adapter, the projector alternates between showing a blue screen and a screen that shows nothing, as if there is no signal. I have tried changing the adapter, the hdmi cable in all of the various combinations. I have reset the iPad and done the various adapter/cable swaps again. I still get the alternating blue screen & blank screen. The iPad has the latest software updates. Does anyone have any suggestions?
