screenshot shortcuts prior to sonoma no longer work

the shortcuts are command and shift with 3, 4, and 5. Now the '5' shortcut kinda works but there is no control. After purchasing stickers to show all the shortcuts for mac os and word on mac, how much did apple decide to change if these are not working. Or is there something stupid old people like myself can do without buying an old mac or removing the stinking sonoma?

I'm assuming you've reviewed this Apple Support article describing screenshots? Take a screenshot - Apple Support

Shift-Command-3 captures the entire display.

Shift-Command-4 captures the portion of the display you've selected

Shift-Command-5 invokes the Screenshot app. Controls are at the bottom of the screen. Is there a control missing you've used in the past?

For me, I almost always use Screenshot app as I've got the app pinned to my Dock. (One click rather than Shift-Command-5). From there I can choose my options and where the screenshot is saved.

Not sure what control you're looking for?

(I reboot quite often lately, for other reasons than screenshots, e.g. unability to start more than a certain number of terminal windows - reminds me of Windows in the olden days. I hope for the next macOS update. I am on Sonoma 14.5, M2 mini, 24GB RAM)

Using " the default key shortcuts. " will not bring up the crosshairs

Shift + Command + 5 are the Default

Using the older Shift + Command + 4 will bring the crosshairs

There were no changes at all regarding screenshots in Sonoma.

It is unclear what is not working for you, but anyway:

Go to System Settings->Keyboard, click on Keyboard Shortcuts…

then select “Screenshots” and make sure that the correct options are selected and activated.

Also, what is not right with Command-Shift-5? Can you clarify?

Your experience clearly indicates that something is not right. It certainly is not the "normal" in Sonoma to have to restart all the time, and the screenshot problem may be just another symptom of a systemic problem.

You could start a new thread, expound the particular issues you are having, and include an Etrecheck report, so we can look for possible causes.

I think there is a communication problem here... by "default shortcuts" I believe it meant either of Command-Shift-3,4 or 5 as the case may be; and of course the crosshairs appear when using Command-Shift-4.

The problem was that the crosshairs failed to appear when they were expected - which, as I wrote before, is not a common Sonoma issue, but rather one particular to the affected user's machine.

With respect 😎

Much has been covered, , in much detail, in earlier posting in this specific thread

This would include the posting from MacMikeInOK which details various keyboard combos available and what they each do

If, as mentioned, OP has to restart the computer to get this working

I agree something is very wrong on this machine

Using a M2 Mac Mini with 8 GB Unified RAM and works like a charm ( any of the Command Combo ) since Sonoma 14.0 to and including 14.5

So the assertion " I hope for the next macOS update. I am on Sonoma 14.5, M2 mini, 24GB RAM) " seems misguided
