SSL error in re-installed OS Mountain Lion

I have re-installed OSX10.8.5 on a late 2013 Intel iMac by means of wifi. The software includes Safari version 6.0.5 (8536.30.1), which cannot establish a secure connection to the server www.Apple.com (or to any other website) over the same wifi. Relevant extracts from the system log seem to be —

apsd: Certificate not yet generated.

An SSL error has occurred and a secure connection to the server cannot be made.

Is there a remedy?

Not only will you encounter expired certs in Mountain Lion now, but the security protocols used by Mail and Safari are too old for almost all modern mail servers or websites. You likely won't be able to fix this with current versions of browsers which all now want macOS Catalina or later.
