How to transfer ownership of a Mac Mini without password

I received a Mac Mini from a neighbor who passed away but the relative who passed it on to me was not able to find the password for it. How do I transfer ownership in this case?

Mac mini, macOS 10.15

More details about the Mini might help. Minis with Silicon or the T2 chip may have activation lock. If that is the case then the rightful inheritor of the Mac will need to get it unlocked for you.

If it's an older Mac you may be able to just erase it. Use Disk Utility to erase an Intel-based Mac - Apple Support
