iOS updates since iOS 17.

Isn't this getting out of hand. Since the release of iOS 17 last september, we had 11 updates for it. That comes down to about one every 2 weeks. And these are not small updates 4-6 Gb each. I find this to be the mark of Apple rushing out a new OS without proper testing. For users which manage a great number of devices this is just terrible.

Latest releases and dates:

iOS 17.4.1 and iPadOS 17.4.1 21 Mar 2024

iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 05 Mar 2024

iOS 17.3.1 and iPadOS 17.3.1 08 Feb 2024

iOS 17.3 and iPadOS 17.3 22 Jan 2024

iOS 17.2 and iPadOS 17.2 11 Dec 2023

iOS 17.1.2 and iPadOS 17.1.2 30 Nov 2023

iOS 17.1.1 and iPadOS 17.1.1 07 Nov 2023

iOS 17.1 and iPadOS 17.1 25 Oct 2023

iOS 17.0.3 and iPadOS 17.0.3 04 Oct 2023

iOS 17.0.2 and iPadOS 17.0.2 26 Sep 2023

iOS 17.0.1 and iPadOS 17.0.1 21 Sep 2023

iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 18 Sep 2023

Something is not right here.

Breaking this down:

iPadOS 17 Major Version release September 2023

Major versions are released annually. For iOS/iPadOS, these are typically released in September of a Calendar year.

After a major version release, it is not unexpected to see a number of rapid minor-point releases - these resolving issues that will be identified by users across a wide range of device models. While Apple's internal and third-party beta testing is reportedly thorough, it cannot possibly hope to regression test against every device model and replicate everyday usage by millions of end-users.

iPadOS 17.x Feature Releases

Feature releases introduce new functionality throughout the major version lifecycle. To date, for iPadOS 17, there have been four feature releases.

  • 17.1 October 23
  • 17.2 December 23
  • 17.3 January 24
  • 14.4 March 24

Each feature release may require a minor-point release to resolve minor issues.

Security Updates

Minor-point releases typically include essential security updates to address emerging security threats or identified security vulnerabilities. Minor-point updates may also include minor functional fixes.

It is perhaps far better to have actively maintained system software that addresses both identified functional issues and security vulnerabilities - in preference to the alternative approach of neglect or inability to respond to emerging threats.

If you are managing a large estate, you might be best advised to consider an appropriate central management solution - consisting of Apple Business Manager (ABM) and a commercial Mobile Device Management (MDM) platform.
