Ipod Touch 6th Generation skips songs

My 6th Gen Ipod Touch will skip songs without playing, sometimes several in a row, when I play in shuffle mode.

iPod, iOS 12

How do you know it's skipping songs? Shuffle mode is designed to "skip" songs, so how have you determined that songs are being skipped?

There are two things to check:

  1. does a song that you believe is being skipped in Shuffle mode play if you play the list containing that song in Normal mode?
    1. if it doesn't, then there's an issue with that song
    2. if it does, go onto the next point
  2. The is a setting for each song that allows the iPod to "skip when shuffling". The setting is in your iTunes Library. In your library, select a song that you think is being skipped completely (i.e. it's never played in shuffle mode) and use iTunes' top bar menu to select Edit/Song Info/Options>Skip when shuffling:

If that option is on, as shown in the screenshot (i.e. there's a tick {checkmark} in the box), then that will cause the issue that you have. Turn it off and then Sync the iPod with your iTunes Library. Note that if you use Manually Manage (rather than Sync), then you will have to remove the song from the iPod and then add back the revised copy.

The option is song specific, so each song will have to edited.

You originally mentioned that this is when you're in Shuffle mode.

    • as I previously asked, what happens if you put the player into Normal mode and select one of these non-playing tracks? Does it play?
    • Also, if it does play, what happens if you keep the player in normal mode, play the song before a non-playing one; when the first song finishes, does the correct next one play?

You also didn't specifically address the point I made about checking the songs in your iTunes Library:

    • did you use an iTunes Library (i.e. iTunes programme on a Windows computer, or older Mac using OS Mojave or earlier) to load these songs onto your iPod? Alternatively, if you're using a newer Mac (running OS Catalina or later), did you use Finder to add the songs to your iPod?

or

    • if you didn't use either of the above, did you buy the music directly from the store, on the iPod?

Many of my songs have been downloaded from Apple Music,

Is it the Apple Music songs that don't play?

I'm not an Apple Music user, so I'm not the best person to answer questions about it, but as far as I am aware, you need to be signed into your Apple account on the iPod in order to play Apple Music. That allows Apple to verify that your Apple Music subscription is still valid (although as far as I know, your iPod doesn't need to be permanently connected to the internet).

Thanks for the reply. What happens is the Ipod cues up the next song but doesn't play it, then after a few seconds skips to the next song and same thing. This continues sometimes for several songs until it starts playing a random song again. Sometimes there is several minutes of silence during this time and I can see the songs are not actually playing by observing the timer. If I toggle the play/pause button it doesn't seem to help. If I manually skip songs one by one same thing happens - eventually I land on a song that plays.

Thanks.

I used the Ipod in shuffle mode yesterday with no issues after trying it in normal play mode for a bit. I did check a few of the skipped songs in ITunes and none were set to skip. Many of my songs have been downloaded from Apple Music, some were purchased on Itunes years ago and many were uploaded to my Itunes library from compact discs. I have not purchased any songs using my Ipod.
