Can I change my Apple ID email address and still use iCloud.com and later delete it?

I plan to get rid of my iCloud.com email address at some point. That is the email address I use to log into my Apple ID. If I'm correct I can change my AppleID to use another non-apple email address such as gmail.com. That is what I wish to do. My question if I do this though will I still have my iCloud.com email address for email usage?

My eventual plan though is once I know everyone knows my gmail.com email address I plan to get rid of my iCloud.com email address. That is the eventual plan. At that point can I then delete my iCloud.com email address while using my gmail.com email address as my Apple ID login?
