Time machine problems on macOS Sonoma

When I want to browse through the Time Machine backups, I see my desktop in the foreground with the backups behind it. How do I get rid of the desktop? Clicking away doesn't help, then everything is gone.

What do you want to see? The point of Time Machine is to let you navigate back in time and possibly retrieve files from the backup that you may have deleted or changed and want to restore.

By default it will show you whatever folder you had open when you used the Browse Time Machine Backups command, but you can use the Sidebar or double click the folders you see to navigate, similarly to what you would do in Finder.

Not sure I get it...

You interface with TM through the drop down in the menubar—

It all seems pretty normal to me. Well, it does say Vandaag, which I believe means Saturday, right? And today is Saturday. Plus the time seems right as well - 16h20, I suppose is the correct time (I'm guessing the Central European Time, given the language, and you posted just a few minutes after that screenshot).

The only unusual thing is that it does not use a relative date (i.e. "Today" instead of "Saturday"), but it does not seem like there is anything incorrect.
