Can I still read old texts in a disconnected iPhone?

My husband passed away recently and had an iPhone 11. I am needing to disconnect service but want to keep his phone to be able to read our old texts. Is this possible?

If that was texts that you both texted each other then that must be on your device too.

I used to delete messages frequently. He had much more of our precious conversations saved than I did. That is why I want this. Just so scared of losing that by disconnecting phone. A family member told me they have old phones that still have texts on them but wanted to be positive before doing that.
