My office spam system recently started filtering emails coming from my own my email address saying something called “Rat” malware was installed on my iphone, threatening disclosure of my personal information, compromising photos etc unless I pay money. Is this just a scam? I am concerned because I recently gave my business card with my email and iPhone number to a person I met at a business function.

RAT is Remote Access Trojan. There are none that can infect an iPhone.

Yes it is a scam. Anyone with your email or phone number can attempt to scare you with these type of messages. To help avoid and report these scams, follow this support article:

Among other details to ponder: If there were compromising photos available to the spammers and scammers (there aren’t), there’d be some personally-identifiable compromising photos included in the email as proof (there aren’t).
