New Image Disk impossible to create on Mac mini

Trying to create a New Image (by Disk Utility), in Macintosh HD (of my Mac-Mini # Sonoma 14.4.1) with the follow parameters:

  • Name: Name.sparsebundle
  • Dimension: 7 GB
  • Format: APFS
  • Encryption: 128-bit AES
  • Partition: Single-Map GUID
  • Image Format: Disk Imagine Sparse Bundle

it replies: "Impossible to create because the File System is read-only" ... What have I to do? Where's my mistake ? --- Thank you for replying and sorry for my English.

I solved this problem by manually adding "Disk Utility" to the list of applications that have Full Disk Access.

Open Settings>Privacy & Security>Full Disk Access

Click on the ➕ icon at the bottom of the list to add an application to the list.

Navigate in the dialog box to /System/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app

It will ask if you want to close and reopen Disk Utility. Approve and you should be good to go. (Assuming that you had the same problem as I did.

The root of the drive is now only for macOS system use which is now on a read-only signed & sealed volume to help increase security and also to minimize the chance of macOS becoming damaged or corrupted. Here are two Apple articles regarding the new drive layout changes which started in macOS 10.15 and expanded in macOS 11.x:

Thank you for your reply -- I'm trying to save it in the same position I have it on my old iMac (I didn't want to resume the old one from a backup and I preferred to start the new, as a new one):

  • "iMac of myname" --> Macintosh HD --> "Name.sparsebundle"

on this one:

  • "Mac mini of myname --> Macintosh HD --> "Name. sparsebundle"

Do you think that I cannot to save it anymore on Macintosh HD but I need to choose a folder (of course out of iCloud) ?
