behringer MC 1820 obsolete?

Since upgrading to logic 10.8.1, my program would not boot (flashes on and off, very annoying) . I then unplugged my midi cable from my Behringer device. Then Logic opened, allowed new tracks. Trouble is, there's no midi input not. Does apple expect me to go directly into the mac with a USB cable from the controller. My controller is ancient yamaha psrE323, has always worked great but has a 5 pin midi cable which went into the behringer. Could I simply get a 5 pin to usb converter to go directly into the mac to solve this problem? What would I do for microphone input ?
