Watch control center doesn’t appear when button is pushed

The control center doesn’t appear when I push the side button. I know it’s not a swipe anymore, but the button doesn’t even show it. When I push it, recent apps that were used appear in list format. I really want to be able to ping my phone, turn on and off sound, etc. Please help!! How do I make the control center appear again??

It appears as if you are using the "Digital Crown," instead of the "Side Button" which is indicated by the blue arrow in the attached image.

Press the side button once to access the Control Center.

Use the buttons and screen on your Apple Watch explains "how to interact with your Apple Watch using the Digital Crown, side button, and gestures."
