Recording at Event with iPhone 14 with XLR audio

At a recent event, I attempted to record clean audio using an XLR/3.5mm cable plugged into a 3.5mm TRRS/lighting adaptor. The phone did not use the clean audio feed but instead used its internal mic.

As this was an event where I as using multiple cameras, these same XLR hookups worked fine plugged into camcorders.

As I’ve read where XLR mics have been plugged into iPhones but needed a power source, is that what I missing? And if so, how could I have achieved getting power in this scenario?

A condenser microphone requires power to operate. Most condenser mics have the ability to switch between an internal battery or phantom power provided by a mixing board or mic preamp.

First, find out if your microphone is a condenser type. If it is, see if it has a compartment for a battery. If it does, insert the required battery type. If it doesn't have a spot for a battery and it is a condenser mic, you will need to put a portable mixer or preamp that supplies phantom power, in line between the mic and your phone.
