Photos Library cannot be opened after Mac OS Sonoma 14 update

After updating to Mac OS Sonoma 14, the photos app returns the below error.

Photo library in icloud will not open

Photos Library.photoslibrary” is in iCloud Drive, and needs to be moved to a folder on your Mac to open.

A google search led me to a thread here which indicated the below steps would resolve the issue and photos would continue to sync between iPhone and Mac as they had prior to the OS update.

Steps followed from the other thread are below. After moving the photolibrary file as described in step 2, the Photos App will now launch, but photos and videos are not syncing from my iPhone to Mac as they had previously up until two days ago when I updated my OS. This seems like a defect or a big step backward in functionality. I see there is another OS update available for Sonoma 14.1. I am hoping the update fixes this issue as it's a huge pain for me and seems like many others.

Step 1:

a. Open Finder

b. Look on the left side for "iCloud Drive" and click that. You should now see a list of folders and files to the right.

c. In the list of folders on the main (right-hand) section, look for Pictures and click that. You should now see a list of folders and/or files that are in the Pictures folder.

d. Look for a file called "Photos Library.photoslibrary". Depending on your settings, it might just show as "Photos Library".

e. If you see this file, you have successfully completed Step 1. This is where all your photos are stored locally.

Step 2:

a. Open another Finder window (from the Finder menu at the top of your screen, choose File and then New Finder Window)

b. In the left pane, look for "Pictures" under Favorites. If you don't have that, look for Macintosh HD, then choose "Users", then choose the folder with your account name, then look for "Pictures" under that.

c. The Pictures folder you found is where you want to move your photo library in the next few steps.

d. Position both Finder windows so that you can see the Photos Library file you found in step 1 and the Pictures folder of both on your screen at the same time. Resize them if necessary.

e. Move your cursor to the Photos Library and click on it once to select it. Then click and hold so you can drag it. Move your cursor a little to make sure it's getting dragged.

f. Drag the file over to the Pictures folder you found in the other window, and drop it into Pictures by releasing your mouse button (or raising your finger on the touchpad).

At this point, you'll get a warning about the file not being available on other devices. Don't be alarmed; this file is only local storage so you really don't want it in iCloud anyway.

Amy,

is your Photos Library now in your Pictures folder?

Could you open the library now again in Photos? To open it in the new location select the Photos Library and double click it to open it in Photos. Then make it your System Photos Library and enable iCloud Photos again as Mark suggested.

You do that in the Photos > Settings:

  • In the General tab of the Settings click "Use as System Photos Library"
  • In the iCloud tab click "iCloud Photos".

In what way is your library no longer syncing? What is the Status bar showing? After moving a Photos Library it may take several days to sync the library again with iCloud. Photos will have to upload all photos again and merge them into the existing iCloud Photos Library. Only then will photos download again the new photos from iCloud.

Yes, my photos library is in my pictures folder - I followed the exact steps that are listed in this posting.

In the General Tab of Settings, I do not see Use as System Photos Library. All that is there is About, Software Update, Storage, Airdrop & Handoff, Login Items, Applecare & Warranty, Language & Region, Date & Time, Sharing, Time Machine, Transfer or Reset, and Startup Disk.

After following the steps I included in this posting, my Photos were synced only through March 17th, not March 27th.

My Mac updated to Sonoma 14.1 last night and now my Photos are fully synced. Not sure if it was time or the update that resolved the syncing.

The bigger question is why did this happen in the first place?

"Use as System Photos Library" is a setting in the Settings menu inside the Photos application, not the Settings application. It doesn't matter now; your library sync has caught up, so your library must be the System Photos Library.

As for why the situation arose, it is likely we won't know unless you remember moving your library to the iCloud Drive folder at some time in the past. It turns out that that was never a safe place for a Photos library, but Photos didn't notice.

Why it came to your attention now is because Apple added code to Photos to detect that particular misplacement.

Hi,

  1. I have Sonoma 14.5 (23F79)
  2. My file "Photos Library.photoslibrary" is placed in Macintosh HD>Users>MyUserFolder>Pictures
  3. I stil receive this error message "An error occurred while migrating the photo library. Please quit and relaunch Photos and try again." when opening my library file.
  4. Photos app is enabled with iCloud.

Let me know what else I should do to open my Photos app please.

Regards.
