I understand that your MacBook Air M2's trackpad isn't working. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue:

Basic troubleshooting:

  1. Restart your computer: A simple restart can often fix minor software glitches that might be causing the trackpad to malfunction.
  2. Check for System Updates: Make sure your MacBook Air M2 is running the latest version of macOS. Updates often include bug fixes that could resolve trackpad functionality issues. You can check for updates by going to System Preferences > Software Update.
  3. Clean the Trackpad: Gently clean the trackpad with a microfiber cloth to remove any dirt or debris that might be interfering with its functionality.

Settings and Accessibility:

  1. Check System Preferences: Go to System Preferences > Accessibility > Trackpad. Ensure that all the trackpad features you want to use are enabled. You can also adjust tracking speed, scrolling speed, and other settings here.

Advanced troubleshooting (if basic steps fail):

  1. Reset SMC and NVRAM (Apple Silicon M2 models don't have PRAM): While resetting NVRAM/PRAM is possible on Intel-based Macs, Apple Silicon Macs like the M2 Air handle NVRAM resets automatically. However, resetting the SMC can sometimes resolve hardware-related glitches that might affect the trackpad. Apple's support website has specific instructions on how to reset the SMC for your MacBook Air M2 model If your Mac battery won’t charge - Apple Tugi (EE).

If none of these steps work:

  1. Contact Apple Support: If none of the troubleshooting steps above resolve the issue, it's possible that there's a hardware problem with your trackpad. In that case, you'll want to contact Apple Support for further assistance. You can do this by visiting the Apple Support website or by taking your MacBook Air M2 to an Apple Store.

Make sure that your Mac is plugged into power, then take one of these actions.

  • Restart: Choose Apple menu  > Restart.
  • Or shut down: Choose Apple menu  > Shut Down. Then press the power button on your Mac to turn it on again.

No other steps are necessary for Mac computers with Apple silicon.

The steps to reset NVRAM don't apply to Mac computers with Apple silicon, and aren't needed on those computers.
