Lost/stolen iPhone and SIM card

Hi,

Been searching for a while but couldn't find a clear answer as to whether should I disable the sim card on my lost/stolen iPhone or keep it enable.

If I disable my sim card, will the lost iPhone message will still show up if the phone is turned on? I don't mind keeping the SIM enabled in the lost iPhone but I also want to get a replacement SIM to keep my number so I can use it with my new phone. But when I order a replacement sim, the sim in the lost phone will be disabled.

I still hope that the phone might show up one day as long as the lost message is on. So in this case keeping the sim card active would be sensible?
