How do I actually lock my iPhone when I turn it off?

I just wanna like push the side button or a combination of side button and volume buttons or something to lock the phone if I’m in a situation where I need to. Right now if I push the side button, the screen will turn off but if I push it again, it’ll just come back on and you won’t need a passcode.

  • If your phone has Touch ID, what do you have at Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Require Passcode?
  • Do you have a Passcode set for the device?

By default when you push the side button to lock your device and push the side button again, it will require authentication to proceed past the Lock Screen either with TouchID/FaceID or with the Passcode.

Locking the phone is done automatically by default. Once you press the Side button the phone is locked and when you press it again, you need to provide either FaceID or the Passcode to be able to view the Home Screen or previous content you were viewing. Most likely ikrupp was talking about creating your own key sequence to lock the screen like it is normally done.

Why that is not happening for you is unclear. I would start by the "Reset All Settings" option provided in the following link, which does not affect your data. If will reset all settings to their default state and you will need to reenter your Wifi password again as well as add any cards to your wallet if you use them. If the results are the same, then I would erase all contents and then restore from your backup.

that because when you lock it and unlock it again you're looking at the phone screen thus enabling face id.

There is literally nothing in the settings called “touch ID& passcode”.

yes, I have a passcode set. It just only asked me to use it if the phone is off for like 20 minutes or something pushing the side button just turns the screen

If I touch the side button again, the screen comes right back on sometimes to the exact thing I was looking at

In fact, if I touch the screen, it turns on

if I touch the volume buttons it turns on

if I touch the sound on and off switch it turns on

sometimes if I just pick the phone up the screen turns on it’s insane.

Since your phone uses Face ID, then in settings you should have "Face ID & Passcode". In this setting, what is listed under "Require Passcode"? If you do not have that, then make sure that it is set to "Allow" at Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Passcode Changes.
