How recent is the "recent" flag on a blocked contact? I understand it means that a blocked contact tried to contact me, but does that mean it was within the past week, month, year, etc.?

On iPhones, "Recents" next to a contact's number, email, etc. just indicates the number/email they used most recently to call you. This could be from a long time ago, even years back. Blocking the contact won't change the "Recent" label.
