I am using mac os monterey 12.6.3, should i upgrade to sonoma os ?

I have absolutely no issues with my present OS. but every time i get a pop up for an update, I wonder if its necessary for me to upgrade to Sonoma OS? and will it have any issues in terms of speed and battery??

You don't have to upgrade to Sonoma, but you should keep Monterey current. The Software Update panel will show macOS 14.4.1, but further down on that panel, you will see:

Another update is available.

More Info…

That More Info… link is to the current version of Monterey 12.7.4 (and probably Safari 17.4) that when selected, will install these, not Sonoma.

Before you make a decision to upgrade the operating system (e.g. Sonoma), you should determine if your printer/scanner vendor provides driver updates for Sonoma (macOS 14), or that the device is also supported without vendor drivers in Apple's built-in AirPrint service. You should also check any third-party applications for their support in Sonoma.

Ordinarily, you should not see persistent notifications to upgrade, but you will see a red badge icon on your System Preferences icon in the Dock.

It does not sound like you should, if it works for you and staying current is not important to you.

Any upgrade will always introduce new / different bugs that need to get sorted out.

The current stable release of Monterey including bug fixes, security updates is macOS 12.7.4

If you still should have iPhoto Libraries or iPhoto Libraries, that need converting to Photos Libraries, do this, before you upgrade to Ventura or Sonoma.

Monterey is the last system version where we can create Photos Libraries from iPhoto or Aperture Libraries, while preserving the albums, folders, and the events. Starting with Ventura we can only import items from iPhoto Libraries and save the media, but will lose the structure of the old libraries.
