Did iPad ever lack a clipboard?

A friend related to me that, “iPads don’t have clipboards, so I had to download one from the App Store”.

She says she is running iOS 17.3, so she does not have an old iPad. I have never experienced the lack of ability to cut and paste, so I have no idea what she’s talking about. I see there are some extensions to clipboards that are available in the App Store.

Has the iPad version of iOS ever liked this essential function, making it necessary to download a program to accomplish cut and paste?

As far back as I can remember, iPads have had cut and paste ability. I suspect she is talking about an app that allows enhanced capabilities such as history -- ability to have multiple things in the clipboard at the same time.

The iPad clipboard is merely a temporary location for text (or objects) that you “cut” or “copy”. When you “paste”, the last item copied to the clipboard is pasted to the chosen location.

The iOS/iPadOS clipboard is not of itself an accessible location or App - neither does it maintain any kind of history that can be reviewed or edited.

To copy to the clipboard, highlight the text passage, image or object; from the menu, select Copy.

Having copied the text or other item, you can simply “paste” to someplace else. To paste the current clipboard object, touch-and-hold with your finger to expose an action menu; from the menu, tap Paste.
